I just installed DeLi on a sata drive, installing from another partition on the same drive.
It worked like an ordinary IDE drive--using the IDE kernel, etc. No tricks involved.

Some BIOS versions have a drive mode option; sata drives should allow multiple modes, including "Legacy", "IDE", or "Native" (IIRC). I think that Legacy and IDE settings may be useful.

The main problem is the switch to the 2.6 kernel. For me this is the essential switch necessary for DeLi to survive the next years. And somebody must take on the task to build this kernel (and the modules of the official kernel version) -- and that's not me
I'm willing and ready to provide packges even with the full PKGBUILD infos (if this is really necessary) and including a change log of the modifications necessary to fit the programs into the DeLi filesystem.
But I cannot take the lead in the kernel development and/or the server administration.
So, as long as nobody declares the willingness to take the lead of the project and (another one ?) to do the kernel development, I'm still remaining in a waiting-and- watching position.

It would be nice to see something going on -- and this doesn't mean the discussions of the stepps further....

I'm trying to setup DeLi 0.8.0 on a machine which it was never meant for (1.6 GHz Atom/1 GB RAM/160 GB sata HDD),just for the fun of it.
To get it online, I need Madwifi or an ethernet driver that must be built from source.

I know the standard approach is to reconfigure the kernel sources using the old .config (.config-ide, in this case). But I encountered one problem:

That's the /boot directory for DeLi--no config found. Same goes for trying :

CPU-Limit & Deli

Hallo Leute, im Linux-Club-Forum bin ich auf ein Tool aufmerksam geworden, welches die CPU-Belastung einzelner Prozesse limitiert.

Da wir hier Deli nutzen, weil unsere Hardware begrenzte Ressourcen besitzen, hat wohl jeder schon mal vor nem Proze� gesessen und gewartet, da� er weiterarbeiten kann (passiert mir st�ndig).

Cpulimit ist also schon interessant.

Nach einiger Suche und Mi�erfolgen (Paket lie� sich nicht entpacken), bin ich dann hier f�ndig geworden:

Allerdings:

weder ./configure noch make install ausf�hren.

Anscheinend reicht ein make.

die Datei cpulimit nach /bin kopiert und folgende �nderungen gemacht:

in /etc/rc.local

folgendes eingetragen:

Au�erdem in rc.multi

ersetzen von

sonst wird das booten nicht beendet.

durchgef�hrt werden um die Rechte anzupassen

All das erledigt und System neu gebootet.

Fehlermeldungen gab es keine.

Aber: IceCat z.B. lastet das System immer noch teilweise zu �ber 90% aus

Also diverse Tests durchgef�hrt (find mist / ), zun�chst in der graphischen Konsole, da hatte das nur ein paar % Auslastung, weil die Hauptarbeit das x-System hatte (�ber 60%).

Also nochmal restart und als root eingeloggt, ohne graphische Umgebung.

In Konsole 1 top, in Konsole 2 wieder nach mist gesucht.

Ok, ich habe keinen Mist auf meinem System

Aber: Je nachdem, auf welcher Partition gesucht wurde, schwankte die CPU-Belastung bis auf maximal 58%.

Es kann nat�rlich sein, da� von Cpulimit lediglich Konsolenprozesse limitiert werden, aber Icecat starte ich immer aus der Konsole heraus, und der krallt sich alles, was er kriegen kann.

Der n�chste Versuch war, ein rechenintensives Programm zu testen, das auch auf der reinen Konsole l�uft.

Spontan f�llt mir da nur ein Primzahlengenerator ein.

Aber: irgendwie komme ich damit nicht klar, wie mache ich damit eine ausf�hrbare Datei? Die man nasm hat mir nicht wirklich weitergeholfen...

Hat irgend jemand Ideen?

Ich habe das nun auf meinem Lappy reproduziert.

Mit einem �hnlichen resultat, nur hier mit SkipStone statt Icecat.

Aber auch so um die 90% CPU-Last.

Also scheint das so nicht zu gehen mit der Limittierung der CPU-Last...

Yes, I think it, too.

Old computers in germany have their friends .
Specially old Laptops you can sell by ebay getting good prices (for example about 80€ for an old Toshiba).

And because more and more people are living with very low money, there is a growing interesting for old computers.

Deli has some bugs and some things are wrong, ok, but it is very fast on old onces, if it is running.

And I think, that has to be the focus of Deli.

For faster computers with more RAM there are a lot of very good distributions (Puppy and much more).

But with lower than 48 MB you have Slitaz, Deli and DSL. Or very old onces without a desktop.

DSL isn't supported the last years.

Slitaz-LIve-CD has problems booting with serial mouse and connecting to internet is not so easy as with DSL or Deli.

And none of that Distris is working with ervery old machine, so you have to try which is working.

I think, Deli has its future, but it needs manpower and womanpower for developing and creating packages.

I've written it days ago in the german forum:

Maybe we can start a training like "creating packages with deli for beginners", so some will find to create new stuff.

Only one must have enough time to 'moderate' that training and have the peace to answer some 'silly questions'.

I found haary ask for some ideas about the future of DeLi Linux project, here is some personal viewpoint for reference.

1, As the 1# bug ( http://www.delilinux.org/wiki/doku.php?id=bugs:bugreports:current-software:doesnt_run_on_old_hardware ) in the DeLi bugs list said, this is a meaningful project, and open source OS has more potential to customize a system for those every old computer relative to those close source OS.

2, Basically, this project is a totally public good stuff, it can't get any commercial profit from it. But, we can provide a way for those people who want express their admiring or thankful heart by accepting donation in the website. This maybe support this project on the financial aspect and maybe make the main developer especially haary to get some financial return.

3, Yes, the modern Open Source OS components aren't suitable for those very old machines, so we must use old components for old machines. Old machine has no ability to execute some heavy jobs ( just like webpage flash ), so no need to use those applications to execute those job. We can define a target machine, for example, this os can run on 10 years old machine smoothly. Kenel 2.6 is heavy for those 10 years machine, but after several years, kernel 2.6 will be light for the "10 years machine" in that time.

4, One person's time and energy and ability is limited, if just one person to do all the things like: leading, developing, writing documents, supporting, bug fixing, etc.. that's a horrible thing and no anyone can do these well, especially, this a totally no money's public good thing. So we can build a platform to make all the developers and users easy to contribute their works, for example, some thing like the AUR system in Arch Linux, etc..

Dillo always said, "fltk2 must be installed"

Ok, i must work with the old dillo form deli 0.7 yet.

Maybe some times later there will be found a solving.

how do i get it to install and just go straight onto desktop as i cant figure out what im doing wrong.

I have the same problem. i repeated the installation watched installation process by pressing Alt+F4 and found out that xorg package is corrupted. i downloaded the xorg package 1.4, a .gz file. how can i install it if i put in a usb? my machine is a sony vaio PCG-748, 266 Mhz 32 Mb RAM, CD Rom and a single USB port. You can delete " glut test" from line 28 in file "Makefile" in the top directory of fltk-2.0.x source, then do " make " and "make install " to install fltk2.

I don't know the reason and don't know if there is any bad effect for doing like this, but dillo really works for me. Maybe, some new stuff enter into the new version of fltk2.

-E = illegal Option

ext4dev = unknown filesystem
